This past Friday night, this bird landed on my daughter's swimming pool.

It is actually a pretty big bird. My daughter says she saw this same bird Thursday's nite and Friday afternoon. I have never seen a big brown bird like this before in the Long Beach, California area. Any ideas what kind of bird it is??


I thought it was either an African kingfisher or an Australian kuckaburo, but looking them up, a kingfisher has a longer beak, while the kuckaburo is more colorful. When I approached it, I got within 5-6 feet, before it flew off. It had a wingspan of about 4-5 feet. But it just flew to the fence. I was thinking it was sick, due to west nile virus or something. There are dead birds every now and then. But we haven't seen it since Friday nite. Any ideas?
